NFPA Updates

NFPA 1010: For the SFFMA Certification Program, NFPA 1010 consolidates the NFPA 1001: Firefighter and NFPA 1002: Driver/Operator areas.

The Certification Board is completing its final review and expects the updates to take effect January 1, 2027. The most significant change adds thermal imaging training at the Firefighter I level.

NFPA 1030: For the SFFMA Certification Program, NFPA 1030 consolidates NFPA 1031: Inspector and Plans Examiner, NFPA 1035: Fire and Life Safety Educator, and NFPA 1035: Public Information Officer.

The Certification Board is also completing its final review and expects the updates to take effect January 1, 2027. The most significant change reduces the two Fire Inspector levels to a single level.

The Certification Board is developing new test banks for HazMat, Firefighter I and II (structural and industrial), Driver/Operator, and Instructor. The board currently offers these exams and is reviewing them to align with the updated NFPA standards. After subject matter experts complete their review, the board plans to launch the new test banks January 1, 2027.

NIMS Updates

Beginning January 1, 2027, the following four NIMS courses will be prerequisites for the issuance of all certifications: ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-700, and ICS-800. Course certificates may already be uploaded as Equivalent Training through individual or department/facility PORTAL accounts. Certificates previously uploaded will automatically apply toward the new requirements.
